LTO Tape & Enterprise Tape Buyback
If your organization is upgrading its backup infrastructure, migrating to cloud storage, or decommissioning legacy tape libraries, you likely have shelves of LTO cartridges and enterprise tape media sitting idle. That media still has real market value — and DES Technologies will buy it.
DES is a trusted ITAD partner specializing in the buyback of LTO tape generations 1 through 9, IBM 3592, 4mm DAT, Oracle T10000, MLR/SLR, and other enterprise-grade storage media. Whether you have 50 cartridges or 50,000, we provide a straightforward, secure, and fully documented process that puts cash back into your IT budget.
LTO Tape Buyback: Generations 1–9
We buy all generations of Linear Tape-Open (LTO) media, from legacy LTO-1 cartridges to current-generation LTO-9. Condition matters — but even older, discontinued generations hold value in secondary markets around the world.

Why Organizations Sell Storage Media to DES
There are good reasons your peers in IT, procurement, and operations choose DES over general resellers or e-waste haulers. We specialize in storage media — it’s not a side service.
- Competitive, transparent pricing. We know the secondary market for tape media because we live in it. You get a fair offer based on real demand, not a lowball number from someone who’ll flip it at a markup.
- No minimum quantities. Have 50 LTO-6 cartridges or 50,000? We handle both. Smaller lots are just as welcome.
- Certified data destruction included. Every cartridge that comes through our facility is handled in accordance with NIST 800-88 Guidelines for Media Sanitization. You receive documentation to support your compliance obligations.
- Secure chain of custody from pickup to payment. We track every asset, every step of the way. This is especially important for regulated industries like healthcare, government, and financial services.
- Fast turnaround and payment. No waiting 90 days for a check. Once assets are received and verified, we move quickly.
- Sustainability you can document. Selling your unused tape media keeps it out of landfills and extends its useful life — directly supporting your organization’s ESG and environmental responsibility goals.
How the Storage Media Buyback Process Works
We keep it simple. Here’s what to expect from first contact to final payment:
- Submit Your Inventory — Send us a list of your tape types, quantities, and general condition. You can use our online quote form or email us directly.
- Receive a Quote — Our team evaluates your inventory against current market conditions and sends you a competitive offer, typically within one business day.
- Arrange Secure Shipping or Pickup — We provide shipping instructions and, for large volumes, can coordinate onsite pickup and logistics management.
- Intake and Verification — When your media arrives, we inspect and verify quantities against your manifest.
- Data Destruction or Sanitization — All tape media undergoes certified data erasure or physical destruction per NIST 800-88. You receive a Certificate of Data Destruction for your records.
- Payment — Once verified, payment is issued promptly. No surprises, no delays.
Data Security and Compliance You Can Count On
For procurement teams, IT managers, and compliance officers, the data security question is not optional. Tape media can hold terabytes of sensitive data — patient records, financial transactions, confidential business files — and it must be handled correctly.
DES Technologies applies industry-recognized data destruction standards to every engagement:
- NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 — Our sanitization procedures follow the guidelines set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology for media sanitization, including purge and destroy methods appropriate for tape media.
- Chain of Custody Documentation — We maintain a documented chain of custody from the moment your assets are received to final disposition. This protects your organization in the event of an audit.
- Certificate of Data Destruction — Provided upon request for every engagement. This document details the assets processed, the destruction method used, and the date completed.
- HIPAA-Aligned Handling — Healthcare organizations trust us with PHI-adjacent media because our processes are designed to support HIPAA compliance obligations around media disposal.
- NAID AAM Alignment — Our data destruction practices align with standards promoted by the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID), the industry’s leading certification body for secure data destruction services.
We understand that a Certificate of Data Destruction is not just paperwork — it’s a compliance record. We take that seriously.
Responsible Media Disposition and Environmental Stewardship
Tape media contains plastics, metals, and chemical compounds that should never end up in a landfill. When you sell your surplus LTO or enterprise tape to DES, you’re participating in a responsible IT lifecycle management program that prioritizes reuse over disposal.
Media that still has residual value gets tested, certified, and resold — extending its working life and reducing the demand for new manufacturing resources. Media that has reached end of life is recycled through responsible e-waste channels in accordance with R2v3 standards.
If your organization tracks sustainability metrics or contributes to ESG reporting, the disposition documentation we provide supports those efforts directly.
Why Choose DES Technologies for Tape Media Buyback

Frequently Asked Questions About Selling Storage Media
What types of storage media does DES Technologies buy?
DES purchases LTO tape cartridges in all generations (LTO-1 through LTO-9), IBM 3592 tape (all generations), 4mm DAT/DDS tape, Oracle T10000 and StorageTek tape, MLR and SLR formats, and other enterprise tape media formats. If you have a format not listed, contact us — we may still have buyers for it.
Do I need to erase the data before sending my tapes?
No. In fact, we recommend that you do not attempt to erase the data yourself. DES Technologies handles certified data destruction as part of the buyback process, following NIST SP 800-88 guidelines. You’ll receive a Certificate of Data Destruction confirming proper sanitization.
Is there a minimum quantity required?
No minimum. Whether you have a small batch of LTO-6 cartridges from a single tape library or an entire data center’s worth of mixed media, we work with organizations of all sizes.
How long does the process take from quote to payment?
Most quotes are issued within one business day of receiving your inventory list. Payment is typically issued within a few business days of asset verification following receipt of your media.
What happens to my tape media after I sell it?
Media in good condition is tested, certified, and resold through DES’s established secondary market channels, extending its useful life. Media that has reached true end of life is processed through R2v3-aligned e-waste recycling. In either case, you receive documentation.
Can DES handle onsite pickup for large volumes?
Yes. For large-volume accounts — particularly enterprise data centers, healthcare networks, or universities with high quantities of tape media — DES offers coordinated onsite logistics and pickup. Contact us to discuss your project scope.
Is DES Technologies able to support healthcare organizations and HIPAA requirements?
Yes. Our secure chain of custody, NIST 800-88 sanitization procedures, and Certificate of Data Destruction documentation are designed to support HIPAA-compliant media disposal. We work regularly with healthcare organizations and understand the documentation requirements involved.
What if I have LTO tapes that are partially used or opened?
Partially used or opened cartridges are still evaluated and purchased. Condition affects value, but does not disqualify a cartridge from our buyback program. Include this detail in your quote request so we can provide an accurate offer.
